Dismal Liberal Turnout
December 11, 2007

OTTAWA – Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry MP Guy Lauzon was appalled by the complete absence of Liberal Party MPs when it came time to vote on two important pieces of legislation before the House of Commons on December 10th.

Remarkably, only 11 of 95 members of the Official Opposition bothered to show up for the two 6:45pm votes, one of which was a confidence motion pertaining to Bill C-28, an act implementing measures from the March 2007 Budget and the Fall Economic Statement.

“The fact that so many members of the Liberal caucus chose to completely disregard this important vote is a slap in the face to Parliamentarians who show up faithfully for each and every vote,” said Lauzon

Canadian democracy is rooted in the principle of Responsible Government. By abdicating on these, and others crucial votes, the Liberals are making a mockery of their responsibilities as the Official Opposition. Stéphane Dion is again demonstrating that he is not a leader.

“As astounded as I am by the lack of respect Liberal MPs have shown towards this House, I am even more shocked by the fact that they feel they have the right to criticize the Government after they repeatedly refuse to stand up for Canadians,” continued a frustrated Lauzon.
