March 19, 2010

Cornwall, Ontario -  Guy Lauzon, Member of Parliament for Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry, announced today on behalf of the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans that the federal government is providing $1.5 million for repairs and improvements to the harbour facility at Cornwall, Ontario.

“Keeping our harbours in good repair positively impacts the economic and social viability of surrounding communities and their businesses,” said Mr. Lauzon. “By funding harbour repairs and improvements, we are creating jobs and investing in the future of Cornwall’s harbour.”

The project includes the reconstruction of the existing walkway along the north side of the harbour, complete with a new retaining wall, floating docks and a sloping rock rubble shoreline.  Along the east walkway, construction includes a new concrete retaining wall and deck surface.  In addition, electrical and water services are being upgraded and new access walkways installed. Construction is scheduled to be completed by June 2010.

This project is being undertaken by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Small Craft Harbours Program, in collaboration with the City of Cornwall, which manages and operates the facility for the benefit of local users. This funding is part of the Government of Canada’s $80 million in regular funding for the Small Craft Harbours Program this year, which is in addition to the $200 million provided for small craft harbours under Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
