LONG SAULT, ON - The Township of South Stormont held an official opening ceremony today to celebrate the completion of the upgrades to the Long Sault Arena.
Guy Lauzon, MP for Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry; Jim Brownell, MPP for Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry; and Bryan McGillis, Mayor of the Township of South Stormont, are pleased to see this important community recreational infrastructure project reach completion.
Work on this project included the addition of two new change rooms with washroom and shower facilities. These improvements respond to minor hockey league requests and give the expanding girls’ hockey league a place to change. The governments of Canada and Ontario and the Township of South Stormont have each contributed $126,804 to the project, which has a total eligible cost of $380,412.
“Investing in recreation facilities like the Long Sault Arena reiterates our government’s commitment to creating jobs and improving Ontario communities,” said MP Lauzon. “These much-needed upgrades ensure this key community facility can continue to serve local families and future generations for years to come, so that children and adults alike can stay fit and healthy.”
“I am very pleased to see our governments investing in infrastructure that promotes healthy, active lifestyles, as well as strengthening our economy and creating jobs,” said MPP Brownell. “More than that, this facility can continue to serve as a hub for this community, where our families can meet and build relationships.”
“This expansion allows our facility to offer the proper amount of change rooms to provide space for all of our recreational user groups,” said Mayor McGillis. “We’re grateful that both senior levels of government recognized this project as a priority for our municipality and the overall longevity of our arena.”
This project is one of more than 760 across the province that is moving forward thanks to a joint federal-provincial investment of more than $380 million under the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) Program in Ontario and the Ontario Recreation Program (Ontario REC). The governments of Canada and Ontario teamed up to support Ontario's communities and create jobs by improving recreational infrastructure, as these types of projects also encourage higher levels of participation in physical activity and community building.
