HAPPY CANADA DAY
July 01, 2010

On July 1st, from Moncton to Fort Simpson, from Rankin Inlet to Montréal, and from Vancouver to Halifax, Canadians will be celebrating Canada`s 143rd birthday. The very first Dominion Day was held in 1868, just a year after the formal union of Canada. We can imagine the incredible pride that Sir John A. MacDonald and the other Fathers of Confederation would feel if they knew just how much we have achieved since then. It’s the same Canadian pride we feel each and every day.

From coast to coast to coast, Canadian society is guided by a shared belief in freedom, democracy and the rule of law. We’re proud of Canadians who gave their lives to defend the freedom of others.

Sixty-five years ago, Canadian troops liberated the Netherlands from tyranny. We freed an entire country. Today, our brave men and women in uniform are making a difference for the people of Haiti, and for the people of Afghanistan.

Canada Day is an opportunity to pay tribute to our country’s remarkable people, places, and events. It is a key part in building our historical memory and it strengthens Canadians’ identity, solidarity, and sense of belonging.

On this memorable day, I will be joining the constituents of SD & SG, from North Dundas to Cornwall, who are taking part in picnics or barbecues and attending parades, shows, or firework displays. I wish you a Happy Canada day!
