SD&SG Municipalities to Receive Massive Increases in Infrastructure Funding
April 14, 2008

OTTAWA – The City of Cornwall and surrounding Municipalities are pegged for massive increases in infrastructure funding from the Federal government.

Today, Member of Parliament and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Agriculture, Guy Lauzon, announced that the federal gas tax fund will become a permanent measure.

“The federal gas tax benefits this riding by providing long-term funding for local infrastructure priorities, ranging from road repair to water management,” said Lauzon.

“As a result of action taken by our Conservative government, SD&SG will see the money it receives from the gas tax grow from $2.7 million in 2007 to just under $6.8 million in 2009,” said Lauzon.

“More importantly, we are making this funding permanent. Under the previous Liberal government, this was not the case. Communities could not with absolute certainty be sure they would receive this funding, straining their ability to plan and finance future infrastructure projects. This is no longer the case,” said Lauzon.

“The Government is making the largest single federal investment in public infrastructure since World War Two through our Building Canada Plan, a total of $33 billion over seven years,” added Lauzon

To help maximize this investment the Government has created a new Crown Corporation called PPP Canada Inc. It will be the first public private partnership office of its kind at the federal level in Canada. By increasing the use of P3’s and taking into account contributions by other levels of government, the government should be able to leverage a $100 billion investment in infrastructure.
