Lauzon Challenges Opposition on New Crime Bill
February 26, 2009
Ottawa - On February 26, 2009,  the Honourable Rob Nicholson, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, introduced legislation to get tough on organized crime: An Act to amend the Criminal Code (organized crime and protection of justice system participants)

If passed by Parliament, the Bill will:

Make murders connected to organized crime automatically first-degree, regardless of intent (First-degree murder is subject to a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment without eligibility for parole for 25 years); target drive-by and other reckless shootings, that involve the reckless disregard for the life or safety of others; and better address assaults against police and peace officers.

“Canadians want action on crime now and that is what we intend to deliver,” said local MP Guy Lauzon. “This proposed legislation will address serious organized crime and gang issues including gang murders, drive-by shootings and additional protection for police and peace officers.”

Lauzon also issued a stern warning to opposition parties: “I am challenging the Liberal Party of Canada to support this legislation.  For too long they have claimed to be tough on crime, but when it comes to supporting initiatives that do just that, they stall and delay bills in Parliament. This bill deserves the full support of the House of Commons and I hope that the Opposition will work with us to quickly pass this important bill.”
