Seaway International Bridge Update
July 24, 2009

Dear Constituent,

I am writing to give you an update on the progress being made on the temporary Point of Entry located on Brookdale Avenue in Cornwall.

The first 10 days of operation have gone reasonably well. The border services guards are back on duty and those who have passed the appropriate training and testing are carrying side arms. Temporary trailers have been set up and technological support systems are being installed in the next few days.

Traffic is flowing well with very few delays. Some people have expressed concern about the safety of the north span bridge when a line up of cars are stopped waiting to clear customs. Recent engineering inspections have confirmed the safety and long term viability of this structure.

The morale of the staff is very upbeat and they are pleased to be back to work. They are explaining the temporary procedures to the travelling public and are receiving positive feedback from travelers.

Concerns have been expressed by residents living or visiting on Cornwall Island who after going through the American customs are required to report to the Canadian customs before going to their destination on Cornwall Island. This is creating an inconvenience and causing some delays. CBSA are monitoring the situation closely in an attempt to improve the process.

The City of Cornwall have been very helpful with the set up of the temporary customs facility and traffic disruption has been minimized because of their efforts.

The opening of a temporary port of entry is allowing the free flow of traffic between both countries while dialogue continues between the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne and the Canadian Border Services Agency. I am hopeful this dialogue will result in a permanent long term solution to this dispute.

Best regards,
