Continued Job Growth in June
July 19, 2010

I was pleased with the Statistics Canada report that indicates 93,000 net new jobs were created in June, the second largest monthly employment gain ever. This lowered Canada's unemployment rate to 7.9%.   Our nation's continued job creation is further evidence Canada’s Economic Action Plan is working.

June's job growth represents the sixth straight month of job gains.  In fact, over the past year Canada has created more than 400,000 new jobs. This week, the IMF again predicted that Canada’s economic growth will be at the head of the pack among the G-7 this year and next year. Little wonder, the BBC recently declared “in this economy, we all want to be Canadian.”  Canada is leading the world financially due to key measures in our Economic Action Plan that have lead to job creation, economic growth and the stability of our financial sector.

One of the key lessons our Government has learnt from the global recession and financial crisis is that policies matter. I believe our strong fiscal and monetary policy frameworks, robust financial regulatory systems, and previous broad-based tax cuts have put us in the best fiscal position of the G-7 to fight the global recession.

I am encouraged to see Canada’s economy on the right track.  Nonetheless, the global recovery remains fragile. As the country with the best fiscal position in the G-7, I believe our Plan is helping Canada lead the way on jobs and growth. By comparison, the Opposition’s plan would raise taxes, halt our recovery, and, according to experts, kill almost 400,000 jobs.
