Our Conservative Government has taken action to deliver the tools our Canadian Forces need to do the jobs asked of them. In the last two weeks we announced that the Government of Canada is buying the Joint Strike Fighter F-35 aircraft. This government is also taking steps to acquire two new Joint Support Ships for the Canadian Navy to conduct operations at home and abroad. I stand proudly behind our brave men and women in uniform and support these important investments in the Canadian Forces.
The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter is, hands down, the best aircraft we can provide our men and women in uniform to face the threats and challenges of the 21st century. This plane will strengthen the Canadian Forces ability to defend Canadian airspace, and it will provide vital air support wherever Canada asks our troops to go. This purchase is an investment in the future of the Canadian Forces, in the safety of our nation, and in the economies of communities across Canada. Canada is already benefiting from the production and development of these state-of-the-art fighter jets. The program has led to more than $350 million in contracts for more than 85 Canadian companies, research laboratories, and universities. Even Liberal Senator Romeo Dallaire described the F-35 as 'excellent' and 'essential' for the Canadian Forces.
Additionally, our Conservative Government is investing $2.6 billion in two new ships for the Canadian Navy. Since the new ships will be built in Canada, this will mean jobs for Canadian workers. The new ships will support our sailors as they carry out the Navy's operations at home and abroad through increasing the range and endurance of the Canadian Navy.
Every day our brave men and women in uniform work to keep Canadians safe here at home and contribute to security and stability around the world. I believe the Canadian Forces should have the tools they need to keep Canada safe; now and in the future.
