Reflecting on 2 years in Government
January 30, 2008

Two years ago, Canadians opened a new chapter in the history of our country. Canadians voted overwhelmingly for change, and they entrusted this Conservative Government with the responsibility to lead. It has been a tremendous honour to serve in Canada's 39th Parliament, and I am very fortunate and privileged to serve as the MP for the community of Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry.

On January 23rd 2006, Canadians faced a choice: they chose change.

Tired of government that focused on its own interests, ordinary Canadians demanded attention to their interests. After years of being stood up by politicians, ordinary Canadians told government to stand up for them. Canadians replaced an agenda designed to make the government strong with a government committed to making the country strong.

Conservatives heard the desire for change. We understood and we responded.
To working parents, we said: we get it.
To the over-taxed, we said: relief is on the way.
To our soldiers: we back you.
To veterans: we do not forget.
To crime victims: never again.
To seniors: you will be respected.
To those unrepresented by lobbyists and special interests: we hear you.
To those who long for reform of our democratic institutions: your time has come.
To the provinces: results will speak for themselves.
To all Canadians: take pride.
And to the world: Canada’s back.

Unlike our opponents, we sought to govern, not to rule. Not to rule over Canadians, but to work for and with Canadians. And we believe that governing is not about what you get; it’s what you give.

Because our country has seen that leadership without service is self-serving.
Just as leadership without priorities goes nowhere and leadership without discipline brings decline. We sought election not to rule but to serve. Government is not about presuming entitlements; it’s about delivering the goods.

Since taking office, we have kept our word. We have done what we said we would do.
Now, sometime between now and October 2009, and none of us knows exactly when, the work of the 39th Parliament will be drawn to a close.

In the meantime, we will govern. We shall continue to lead. We will keep our word.
We will stand up for millions of Canadians who work hard, pay their taxes and play by the rules.

And then, when the time comes, we will run on our record, our clear direction and on confidence in the future, and offer a stronger Canada for all of us.

Sincerely,

Guy Lauzon, MP
Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry
