Lauzon Reflects on Accomplishments, Looks to the Future
March 17, 2008
Today in Canada, the economy is strong, the government is clean and the country is united. Canada is a more stable and optimistic place than any time in our recent past. I'm proud of what the Conservative Government has managed to accomplish in such a short time.

Canadians are paying less tax. We reduced the GST from 7% to 5% and lowered the overall tax burden for Canadians and businesses by $190 billion. In addition, we passed the toughest crime bill in recent memory, while also implementing sweeping anti-corruption legislation.

Personally, I'm most proud of the work that's been done to secure jobs in the riding. Since being elected, I have worked toward the creation of an Employment Insurance centre of specialization in Cornwall, resulting in the creation of 41 high paying jobs. I was also proud to announce the Government's decision to build a new RCMP regional headquarters in the riding.

This January, I had the pleasure to announce what I consider to be my most important achievement as MP for this community to date: the creation of a Service Canada call centre that bring 173 new jobs to the riding.

It's rewarding to reflect on what's been accomplished, but it's just as important to talk about what's to come.

In the next five years we can expect a new hospital, the beginning of work on a low-level bridge, the redevelopment of the Domtar property, and new shopping malls and office space. Cornwall is on the right track and is fast becoming a top destination to live, work, invest and raise a family in. I will continue to work diligently with partners in the community and government to help realize this vision.
