CORNWALL- Guy Lauzon, Member of Parliament for Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry, reminded constituents of the free service available through his constituency offices to assist with the Disability Tax Credit.
The disability tax credit (DTC) is a non-refundable tax credit that helps persons with disabilities or their supporting persons reduce the amount of income tax they may have to pay. An individual may claim the disability amount once they are eligible for the DTC. This amount includes a supplement for persons under 18 years of age at the end of the year.
The purpose of the DTC is to provide for greater tax equity by allowing some relief for disability costs, since these are unavoidable additional expenses that other taxpayers don’t have to face.
Being eligible for the DTC can open the door to other federal, provincial, or territorial programs such as the registered disability savings plan, the working income tax benefit, and the child disability benefit.
Constituents of Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry may contact Lauzon’s office toll-free at 1-888-805-2513 to set up an appointment to discuss their eligibility. Staff will send all paperwork to their family physician or specialist and send all paperwork and documents to Canada Revenue Agency at no cost.
Disability Tax Credit consultants have advertised their for-profit services aggressively across Canada, and many take a commission from the families and individuals with disabilities. Some companies charge as much as 30%, which could be thousands of dollars taken from Canadians who truly need the assistance in their limited budgets. Lauzon has worked in the House of Commons to restrict the abilities of these private, for-profit companies from taking advantages of Canadians.
- The Constituency Office of Guy Lauzon dedicates a full-time staff member, Sue Dingwall, to assist with the Disability Tax Credit.
- While private companies charge and keep a commission, the services provided by MP Lauzon’s staff are done at no charge. This ensures that thousands of dollars remain with the families coping with a disability, not accountants and consultants.
- Guy Lauzon’s office has assisted over 1,500 families and individuals obtain over $12.4 million in Disability Tax Credit funds in the past 7 years. The staff have an excellent working relationship with doctors, specialists, and the Canada Revenue Agency in the region to ensure a smooth process.
“The Disability Tax Credit has made a huge impact to many residents in our riding, and we want to make sure that they get the tax refunds they deserve to support their families and their needs. These so-called consultants rip off people with disabilities for thousands of dollars when our staff offers the service for free and with no commission. I will continue to push this issue in the House of Commons to restrict their ability to prey on the vulnerable in our country. ”
